Dan Berger

Dan Berger’s interests in dinosaurs and astronomy were thrown for a loop at the age of six when his older brother read him The Hobbit. The mutagenic effects of heroic fantasy skewed Dan’s DNA, shaping him into a human genre vortex. Tolkein, Lovecraft, Asimov, Lewis, and Vance were followed by Gibson, Sterling, Banks, and Hobb among others.

Since then, Dan has focused his genre interests on the cult 1984 science fiction farce film The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. He was instrumental in reviving the official Buckaroo Banzai newsletter World Watch One, first as a co-editor in 2004 for the film’s 20th anniversary, then as Editor-in-Chief of the Chicago Bureau edition beginning in 2006. The newsletter has featured contributions from Banzai director and Oscar nominated screen writer W. D. Richter, Banzai screen writer and author Earl Mac Rauch, comic book artists Paul Gulacy and Matt Haley, and Star Trek historian/art department guru Mike Okuda. Special limited edition World Watch One film guides found their way into Buckaroo Banzai screenings at the 2011 New York Film Festival and The Wright Stuff III/Movies Edgar Has Never Seen.

Dan’s work has also appeared in Moonstone Books’ preview issue for the Buckaroo Banzai comic book miniseries Return of the Screw. He served as a consultant and content provider for many of the extras and bonus materials in the Return of the Screw trade paperback collection.
