Fathom Events to Host Star Trek: TNG The Best of Both Worlds Blu-ray Screening

The Best of Both TNG Blu-ray coversWhen startrek.com announced on February 4th that not one, but two highly anticipated Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-ray packages were gearing up for an April 30th release date, fans took notice. Within minutes of the announcement, the Foes of Reality blog metrics started getting hits on our Fathom Events brings Season Two Goodness to the Big Screen post made December of 2012 as people scrambled for information on a Fathom Season Three celebration event.

It is easy to understand the excitement. One of the April 30th releases is a completely restored high definition Blu-ray set of TNG’s Third Season, arguably the watershed season that propelled TNG into the history books as one of the highest rated first-run syndicated television programs of all time. The second release is a fan-dream that has gestated ever since the long summer of 1990–a The Best of Both Worlds Blu-ray set which, “…takes the two-part TNG saga that featured the Borg and reedits it into a 90-minute feature-length experience,” according to startrek.com.

Pay careful attention to that “90-minute feature-length experience” part. It bears watching.

No formal announcement of any Fathom Events for either a TNG Third Season Celebration or The Best of Both Worlds special Blu-ray release have been made at this time. It is uncertain if Fathom will schedule any events for either a Third Season celebration or a The Best of Both Worlds theatrical screening, both, or neither.

They’d be crazy not to try. Star Trek: First Contact was far and away the most successful TNG feature film ever released, in large part because it built upon the success of The Best of Both Worlds. An opportunity to see The Best of Both Worlds on a big screen could do nothing but benefit Fathom Events, CBS Home Entertainment, and any other marketing partners willing to sign on for the ride.

Our efforts to contact the Fathom Events press relations department have met with no comment so far. However, based on Fathom’s previous marketing timetables and a good dose of common sense, we have assembled the following estimated dates regarding various announcements, ticket availability, and show dates for potential upcoming Fathom Events celebrating TNG’s Third Season:

Week of March 25: startrek.com announces Fathom Event for a TNG Third Season Celebration screening, a theatrical The Best of Both Worlds screening, or both.

Week of March 31: Tickets go on sale for Season Three/BoBW event(s) through Fandango and at local theaters.

Week of April 21: Fathom Events hosts Season Three/BoBW screening(s).

April 30: Season Three/BoBW Blu-rays go on sale.

It is worth noting that the week of April 21st currently features only one Fathom Event, a showing of Giulio Cesare as part of their The Met: Live in HD series. Will we see Tasha Yar or Locutus of Borg on a big screen near you earlier that same week? Stay tuned.

UPDATE: Well, that didn’t take long!

The following announcement appeared this morning, February 15, at startrek.com:

“Star Trek fans, be sure to save the date: Thursday, April 25. That night, in select theaters around the country, NCM Fathom Events and CBS Home Entertainment will team up to present “The Best of Both Worlds” – considered by most fans the best-ever Star Trek two-part episode – gloriously remastered as a feature-length presentation.”

Tickets are currently available for pre-sale through Fandango. You can find further details here at startrek.com.

Remember, you heard it here first!

  1. This looks really cool – I have very fond memories of the Borg stuff. Poor Picard. Of course, over time with the Borg queen and all they sort of… dark I say it… Borked the Borg. Next Generation had the coolest Borg stuff.

Totally, totally agree with you. The Borg began getting Borked even during TNG when Lore showed up with those renegade Borg during the “Descent” two-part episode for the Season Six cliffhanger/Season Seven premier. I think a lot of TNG fans still consider “The Best of Both Worlds” to be the best Next Generation film never released. Let’s hope CBS Home Entertainment and Fathom think so, too.
